The shift by the Turkish military in late February 2008 from the use of limited airpower in northern Iraq to the initiation of major cross-border ground operations in its fight against rebels from the Kurdistan Workers Party (Partiya Karkern Kurdistan, or PKK) has focused attention on the potentially dangerous and destabilizing effects of Turkish incursions on the Kurdish north, an area of relative peace and widespread pro-American sentiment. Beyond the immediate results of Turkish military activities, the offensive had further significant repercussions; because it was conducted with U.S. approval and support, it indicated a major reevaluation by the United States of U.S.-Kurdish relations.
